The internal DNS is easy enough, but what confuses me is the external DNS entry and how this links with the internal domain. Basically, I don't understand what I need to do to make an external domain point to the internal server. All I have right now is a server on our internal domain, that's it.

Traffic from your internal network will not flow out the router and then back in to the server when sharing the same external ip.
